Everyone Ever in the World by The Luxury of Protest 2011

“…a visual representation of the number of people to have lived versus been killed in wars, massacres and genocide during the recorded history of humankind. The visualisation uses existing paper area and paper loss (die cut circle) to represent the concepts of life and death respectively. The total number of people to have lived was estimated… [to be] approximately 77.6 billion human beings… and is represented in the poster as total paper area (650 mm x 920 mm). The total people killed in conflicts was collated from a number of historical source books and was summed for all conflicts - approximately 969 million people killed, or ~1.25% of all the people to have ever lived (die cut area = 650 mm x 920 mm x 0.0125). The timescale encompasses 3200 BCE to 2009 CE - a period of over 5 millennia, and 1100+ conflicted of recorded human history.” [more]

The Cobol Braindarin

Victo Ngai

This cover illustration is for the latest ComputerWorld magazine. The story: when the last Cobol programers retire, 50 years of business processes within the softwares they created may be lost. I was playing with the term “braindrain, and came up with the idea of a giant creature mourning over the lost of his precious programer blood from his third eye (the gateway to higher consciousness and knowledge).
Initially, the editors were a bit concerned the image may be too bloody. Big thanks to AD April Montgomery who fought for the idea as she was insightful to know that my style would balance out the gore factors. We also decided a more robotic form would address the concern. Nothing beats working with someone who speaks the same visual language.
I love April’s layout and type treatment and am very happy with how the piece turned out.
This is one of the projects that made me go -” I get paid to have this much fun? Life is pretty sweet!”
Happy Memorial long weekend guysss!

Ceramic art by Carol Gouthro

“I have a strong interest in natural forms, cultural artifacts and personal mementos. I am drawn to ornament, embellishment, pattern, and texture. For the last ten years the vessel forms in my ceramic work have slowly been evolving into botanically inspired hybrid sculptural forms. In working on these pieces I have become more involved with the details, the close ups, the abstract, the peering into. My interest in detail, layers and encrustations has been heightened by repeated travels to India and China. I am fascinated by the complexity, diversity, beauty and danger of the natural world and this leads to thoughts about growth, nourishment, attraction, and sexuality. Built into these hybrids are some of the artifacts and mementos that form my DNA.”
